The Real Cost of "Cheap" Flight Tickets: Convenience Fees, GST & Hidden Charges

By Tatkal Flights · 8 May 2026 · 6 min read

You search for a flight, see "₹2,899" in big bold text, click through to book... and the final price is ₹4,200. Where did the extra ₹1,300 come from?

Welcome to the modern Indian flight pricing model: drip pricing where the advertised "base fare" is genuinely the start, and 4-7 additional fees stack up before checkout. Here's what each one is and how to minimise them.

Anatomy of a flight ticket cost

ComponentTypical amountWhat it is
Base fare₹2,000-12,000The airline's price for the seat
Fuel surcharge / YQ₹500-1,500Fuel cost passed through
UDF (User Development Fee)₹100-500Airport development charge
PSF (Passenger Service Fee)₹100-200Airport security & service
GST5% of base+YQ (economy) or 12% (business)Government tax
Convenience fee (booking site)₹100-400OTA's processing fee
Payment gateway fee₹0-100Some sites charge based on payment method
Seat selection fee₹0-1,500Optional — for choosing seat
Baggage fee (LCC)₹0-1,000For bags beyond included weight
Meal fee (LCC)₹200-700Optional — for in-flight meal

The mandatory fees (you can't avoid)

These are roughly 30-40% on top of the base fare. They're not "hidden" in the sense of being avoidable, but they're often not in the headline price.

The optional fees (you can avoid)

1. Convenience fees

Booking direct with the airline (via their app/website) usually has ₹0-150 convenience fee. Booking via OTAs (MMT, EaseMyTrip, Cleartrip, Yatra) typically adds ₹200-400. Sometimes the OTA's promo discount more than offsets this; sometimes not.

2. Payment gateway fees

Some OTAs charge extra for credit card vs UPI. UPI is usually free.

3. Seat selection

If you don't care about your specific seat, skip selection during booking. Auto-assigned at check-in is free. Front-row, window/aisle, exit-row all carry fees on most LCCs.

4. Baggage fee

Indian LCC's typically include 7kg cabin + 15kg check-in for free. Beyond that, fees stack quickly. Pre-paying online is ₹200-500 per piece; airport drop-off can be ₹1,200-2,500. Always pre-pay.

5. Meal fees

If your flight is <2 hours, skip the meal. Eat before/after.

How to minimise total cost

  1. Compare the all-inclusive total, not the base fare — many travellers click on "₹2,899" and pay ₹4,200; the cheapest base fare isn't always the cheapest total
  2. Book via the airline directly if their convenience fee is lower than the OTA's discount
  3. Use UPI to avoid payment gateway fees
  4. Skip seat selection unless you specifically need it
  5. Pre-pay extra baggage online if you need it
  6. Use credit card promo offers — ICICI, HDFC, Axis frequently offer 5-10% off on flight bookings
  7. Check OTA promo codes — sometimes ₹500-1,500 off, more than offsetting the convenience fee

The best total-cost combinations

For a 2-hour metro route fare of ₹3,000 base:

The bottom line

The advertised "lowest" fare is rarely what you'll pay. Mandatory fees add 30-40%. Optional fees can add another 10-25% if you don't actively skip them. Compare all-inclusive totals across booking sites, use UPI, skip non-essential add-ons, and stack credit card / promo offers for genuine savings.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the final price higher than the advertised fare?

The advertised fare is usually the base fare, not all-inclusive. Add fuel surcharge, airport fees, GST, and any optional services like seat selection.

What is a convenience fee on a flight ticket?

A processing fee charged by booking platforms (OTAs) on top of the airline fare. Typically Rs 100-400 per ticket.

How do I avoid paying convenience fees?

Book directly with the airline (via their app/website). Their convenience fee is usually Rs 0-150, lower than OTA fees.

Is GST charged on flight tickets in India?

Yes. 5% GST on economy class fares and 12% on business class. Calculated on base fare plus fuel surcharge.

Is it cheaper to book at the airport?

No. Airport ticket counters are almost always more expensive than online booking by Rs 500-1,500.
