How to Book a Tatkal (Last-Minute) Flight in India

A clear, step-by-step walkthrough for booking a last-minute domestic flight — from picking the right moment to search, through comparing airlines, to getting a confirmed PNR in hand. Works whether you're booking for tomorrow or for a flight that leaves in three hours.

Quick answer

  • Search at a price re-evaluation window (~8 AM, 4 PM, late night IST).
  • Compare all carriers in one view; the cheapest changes daily.
  • Check the fare bucket for baggage before you pay.
  • Pay by UPI, get a confirmed PNR instantly, then web check-in.

Step 1 — Search at the right moment

Airline systems release discounted last-minute inventory at predictable times: roughly 8–10 AM, 4–6 PM and 10 PM–midnight IST. Searching just after one of these windows shows you freshly released seats rather than stale pricing. If you have any date flexibility, a Tuesday or Wednesday morning departure is usually the cheapest.

Step 2 — Compare every airline in one view

Don't open five apps. On tatkal.flights, one search returns live fares from IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Akasa and SpiceJet, sorted by price. On most routes the top three sit within ₹500 of each other and the cheapest shifts day to day, so the comparison is worth the ten seconds.

Step 3 — Read the fare bucket, not just the price

The lowest fare may be a "Lite"-type bucket with no checked baggage. If you have a bag, a slightly higher bucket that includes 15 kg can be cheaper than paying the airport bag fee (₹450–₹700). Check what's included before you commit.

Step 4 — Enter travellers and pay

Add passenger names exactly as on the government photo ID you'll carry. Pay via UPI for the fastest confirmation, or card / net banking. Payment is processed securely through Razorpay; we never store card details.

Step 5 — Get your PNR and check in

A confirmed airline PNR appears on screen instantly and arrives by WhatsApp. Head straight to web check-in if the window is open (48 hours to 60 minutes before departure on most carriers) to pick a free seat and skip the counter queue.

Refund note: if the airline cancels or reschedules by more than two hours, you're owed a full refund under DGCA rules regardless of fare bucket. See the refund-rights guide.
