GOI vs GOX: Which Goa Airport Should You Fly To? (2026 Guide)

Goa has two airports. Most travellers don't realise this until they're at the booking page, see two different IATA codes and two different fares, and freeze. GOI (Dabolim) is the older airport in South Goa. GOX (Manohar International, Mopa) is the new one in North Goa — opened January 2023 and now handles the majority of Goa's domestic traffic.

Pick the wrong one and you'll spend an extra two hours and ₹1,500 on a taxi. Pick the right one and you're at your beach shack in 30 minutes. Here's how to choose.

Which airline flies from where?

Both airports are well-served by domestic carriers, but the schedule lean is different.

For routes from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, you'll find frequent service at both airports. For routes from Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, GOX has been adding capacity aggressively and is often the cheaper option.

The fare question: which is cheaper?

On average, GOX is 10-20% cheaper than GOI on overlapping routes. Two reasons:

• Lower airport charges. GOX has lower User Development Fees (UDF) and aeronautical charges, which airlines pass through partially.
• IndiGo capacity shift. When IndiGo moved most of its Goa schedule to GOX in late 2023, fares dropped sharply as supply increased on the new airport.

But this is an average. On any specific date, especially for last-minute travel, the gap can flip. Always check both.

Fly into GOX (Mopa) if you're staying in:

• Calangute, Baga, Candolim, Sinquerim — classic North Goa beaches
• Anjuna, Vagator, Chapora, Arambol — mid & far North Goa
• Morjim, Ashvem, Mandrem — closest to GOX
• Panjim — either airport works, but GOX often has cheaper fares

Fly into GOI (Dabolim) if you're staying in:

• Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim — South Goa beach belt
• Palolem, Agonda — far South Goa
• Vasco, Bogmalo, Dona Paula
• Anywhere connected to Madgaon railway station for onward train

Fly into one, out of the other if you're:

• Doing a North → South road trip across your stay
• Driving down from Pune via Belgaum / NH4 then flying out from GOX
• Booking a multi-city ticket on a single PNR for convenience

The "Goa" trap in flight searches

Many booking platforms (and a lot of OTAs) show only GOI when you type "Goa" — even though GOX may have a cheaper or better-timed flight on the same date. This is a hangover from the legacy system where Goa = GOI for decades.

To avoid missing the cheaper option:

1. Run two searches — one with GOI as destination, one with GOX. Compare.
2. Or use a platform that auto-merges both. On Tatkal Flights, typing "Goa" or selecting either airport returns combined results from GOI and GOX.
3. If you're price-sensitive, do this BEFORE booking your hotel — the airport savings may pay for a nicer stay.

Terminal facilities & experience

GOI (Dabolim)

Built incrementally since 1955 and shared with the Indian Navy. The terminal was upgraded in 2014 but operations are still slot-constrained because the Navy controls the runway. Expect:

• Compact terminal — quick to walk through
• Limited F&B options post-security (handful of cafes, one Cafe Coffee Day, a couple of bar lounges)
• Free Wi-Fi for 30 min via OTP
• Pre-paid taxi counter still useful here; Ola/Uber availability is patchy in peak season
• Navy slot restrictions can lead to early-morning & late-evening congestion

GOX (Mopa)

Purpose-built and opened in 2023. Significantly bigger and more modern than Dabolim. Expect:

• Spacious terminal with longer walks — arrive earlier if you're elderly or with kids
• Wider F&B and retail selection (Starbucks, Cafe Coffee Day, multiple lounges)
• Reliable Wi-Fi, multiple charging stations at gates
• Pre-paid taxi counter is the easiest option; Ola/Uber works but airport parking adds a wait
• Solar-powered terminal with modern HVAC — noticeably cooler than Dabolim

Getting to/from each airport

GOX (Mopa) transport

• Pre-paid taxi: ₹1,200-1,500 to Calangute area, ₹2,000-2,400 to Panjim, ₹3,800+ to Margao
• Ola/Uber: available but parking is at a distant lot; expect a 10-15 min wait for pickup
• Bus: KTCL airport shuttle to Panjim and Mapusa, hourly during day
• Self-drive rental: Counters at terminal; cheaper if you collect at Mapusa

GOI (Dabolim) transport

• Pre-paid taxi: ₹700-900 to Vasco/Bogmalo, ₹1,400-1,800 to Panjim, ₹2,500+ to Calangute
• Ola/Uber: available; sometimes slow during peak movement
• Train: Vasco station is 4 km away; useful for travel south to Margao/Karwar
• Pre-booked car: Most South Goa resorts arrange airport pickup — often the simplest option

When does each airport make less sense?

Skip GOI when:

• You're staying anywhere north of Panjim — the drive will eat your first afternoon
• You're price-sensitive on a route where GOX has better inventory
• You're flying a budget carrier from a metro — GOX often has cheaper IndiGo/Akasa

Skip GOX when:

• You're staying in South Goa — the drive from Mopa is brutal (3+ hours to Palolem)
• You're connecting to/from train at Madgaon (Margao station)
• You need an international flight not yet on GOX's schedule
• You arrive late at night with no hotel transfer — pre-paid taxi queues are shorter at GOI

Last-minute travel: tactical tips

If you're booking inside 7 days for Goa:

• Check both airports. Last-minute price gaps between GOI and GOX can be ₹2,000-4,000 on the same date.
• Be flexible on inbound airport. If you're staying mid-Goa (Panjim, Candolim), either works — pick the cheaper.
• Be rigid on outbound airport. Don't book a flight out of GOI if you're checking out of a Mandrem villa — the 90-min taxi will be panic-stressful.
• Watch for Friday-evening GOI surge. Goa's most popular inbound day — GOX is often cheaper here.
• Monsoon discounts (June-Sept): Both airports drop fares hard. Pick whichever is closer to your stay.
